Movie Time--X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class
Wow, this was a really good movie. I mean, good show! It had drama, knew when to cut loose with some humor, some amazing acting on the part of folk like James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr, and Kevin Bacon as the wild Sebastian Shaw, and mind-blowing special effects to accompany the action. Yeah, I was impressed.
I won't spoil the whole movie by breaking it down piece-by-piece, but I will say I was surprised by how much time goes by before Xavier and Lehnsherr even meet. I don't mind, because even though the movie is 2 hours and 11 minutes or so long, the time just flies by because you're having so much fun. When the two do team up and start gathering the young mutants for the big battle that you've undoubtedly seen in the previews, even more intriguing things occur, and then by the time we hit the end of the movie you should feel really satisfied with such a great flick.

If you're a continuity freak, this sits comfortably with the other X-Men flicks, setting itself up for the other movies, and explaining certain things that might bug you (like how Mystique still looked young in our present-day). I really wasn't too worried about that continuity junk, but with it in mind it was kind of sad seeing the hopefulness of Xavier and Lehnsherr for the future knowing they are bound to become enemies in the future as Professor X and Magneto.

This is a really great movie, and whether you've seen the other X-Men movies (and/or Wolverine movie) or not, I would recommend going out and seeing this. It has a morals about being proud of who you are, not blindly following orders and trusting in the goodness of humankind. Also, it is really entertaining.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

  1. Yes but Moira McTaggart's not Scottish anymore! Boohoo!

  2. Maybe it is a different lady? Heh. Seriously though, I was thinking, and Xavier walks to greet the young mutants in the Wolverine movie, which wouldn't wash with what happens here, right? Eh, nothing too horrible.

  3. Xavier and Magneto scoping out Jean Grey in X3 doesn't vibe with First Class either! Still, great movie.
