I Suspect the Song, "Sweetest Pie," is Not Actually About Pie

You know I find the evolution of dirty lyrics fascinating. I did a report in high school about controversial music and the efforts to censor lyrics judged, "Explicit," due to swearing, sexual content, or being political in a way that rubbed folks the wrong way (e.g. the song, "Fuck Tha Police," to give an example). A few years ago I wrote about how it was interesting to see the evolution of raunchy lyrics from 2 Live Crew to rappers such as City Girls. Little did I suspect that we would get a song like, "WAP," which is literally about females getting super aroused to the point where a, "Bucket and a mop," is needed to wipe up all the wetness of the genitals. A song like, "Me So Horny," is now incredibly tame compared to, "WAP," or even a new song that at first, I thought was about baked goods but quickly realized was definitely not.

"Sweetest Pie," at first blush seems to be about a really sweet treat that Dua Lipa is presenting to a gentleman when she begins singing the song. Certain lyrics make it clear that this pie is not a literal one, however, and by the time Megan Thee Stallion starts rapping any idea this pie is innocent is thrown out the window. The musical scholar in me just finds all this fascinating to think how outraged people were at the simple statement by some gents that they were horny and how tame that is compared to these ladies going in-depth about having some pie that obviously is a stand-in for the Vulva. Here's the music video which is not really safe for work at all, just so you know:

It continues to also be interesting as we see more women proudly proclaiming their sexuality and swatting away at any haters who dare to slut-shame them. Decades ago it just seemed to be the guys who rapped dirty lyrics (with the exception of notable trailblazer ladies, because we need to give credit where credit is due), but now men and women spit bars that can make listeners both nod their heads along and blush a bit. Whether it is Too Short with, "Freaky Tales," or Cardi B and Megan thee Stallion with, "WAP," or now Dua Lipa and Mega Thee Stallion with, "Sweetest Pie," dirty lyrics keep evolving.

Oh, and I'm aware I'm pretty much just talking about pop and rap. I don't know rock or country as well so I can't comment about those with nearly as much knowledge. I'd more than welcome comments about dirty lyrics and how they've changed in rock and country should anyone have some insight.

When the Featured Musical Artist Upstages the Main One--a Fun Little List

Something I find interesting is when a song has a guest singer or rapper and they actually upstage the main person. Whether it is a remix by that guest that is better than the original or a so-so song that suddenly features a bombastic verse, I sometimes take note of this and wanted to share some times I've noticed it.

"Savage Remix," from, "Good News."

Megan Thee Stallion's song, "Savage," was perfectly catchy and fun. Then they threw Beyonce on the track for the remix and she obliterated it (in a good way). I'm not even a huge fan of Queen B, but man if she doesn't rap and sing some killer bars.

"Interlude," from, "Tha Carter IV."

On Lil Wayne's album, "Tha Carther IV," he has tracks labeled that feature guest verses from assorted rappers. One, "Interlude," is simply labeled as having Tech N9ne appearing, and if you listen to it he indeed raps...but then suddenly another voice comes on the track that isn't indicated anywhere in the liner notes or anything on the physical copy of the CD I had purchased (yes, I bought the CD). That voice is Andre 3000, the greatest living mostly-retired rapper and he drops a verse that makes an already great album (the last one by Lil' Wayne I really dug) even better. It was a total surprise to hear Andre 3000 suddenly appear considering this was after OutKast's last album and well into his departure from rapping usually. I'm just glad Wayne convinced him to drop by.

"Nuthin But a G Thang," from, "The Chronic."

Dr. Dre's solo album, "The Chronic," has so much Snoop Dogg on it that some argue it should be considered Dogg's debut LP even moreso than, "Doggystyle." Wherever you fall on that debate, Dr. Dre has admittedly always been a better producer than rapper, with the sound of, "Nuthin But a G Thang," being amazing with its 90's West Coast vibe that Snoop lays his now-signature laid-back drawl over. Dre maybe wasn't the best rapper, but he found some of the best talents ever to make tracks for.

"B.S." from "Stargazing."

I'm not a big fan of Jhené Aiko, many of her songs seem to lack particularly deep lyrics, he singing strikes me as a bit monotone, and so forth. That said, her song, "B.S." has a really catchy melody and she does a decent job on it...only to get totally overshadowed by a guest-verse from the incredibly talented artist H.E.R. I feel a little bad for Aiko as this is a rare song she's pretty good on, but then she just gets blown out of the water by H.E.R. What can ya do?

Kendrick Lamar on any track

I said Andre 3000 was the greatest living rapper alive who is mostly retired up above and that is because Kendrick Lamar is the greatest living rapper alive who is quite active in making songs. Whether it is his own amazing albums or a number of guest appearances where despite being the featured artist he simply makes a track all his own, Kendrick Lamar is an unstoppable burst of creative energy who you're lucky to have on your song because it's gonna be amazing, but you do have to come to terms with the fact he'll outshine anything you contribute.

I'm sure there are plenty of other occasions I didn't think to mention, so please comment if you have one in mind.

Listening to Her Raunchy Music Made Me Wonder...What if Megan Thee Stallion Was Secretly Vanilla?

Megan Thee Stallion is a rapper who is known for some saucy lyrics. She talks about how good she is at wild and kinky sex, a lot. Some of her lyrics include bragging about how her vagina has so much grip men can't last more than a minute in bed with her and that she messes them up in the head and causes them to obsess about her thanks to her sex-abilities. She talks about all kinds of wild sex acts like climbing on a man's face and, "Doing a luau," and other assorted actions that incorporate pain or domination. Now, I am by no means stating Megan Thee Stallion is bad at sex, I'm sure her partner/s are always very satisfied, but what if Megan Thee Stallion was secretly vanilla and had us all fooled?

Musicians will sometimes create an image of themselves that is exaggerated or over-the-top. After all, many musicians are not partying constantly (and those who do often sadly end up dead) and lots of gangster rappers are not actually selling drugs or shooting rivals (and rappers who do engage in crimes have tended to end-up in prison or also sadly dead). Hence, it would be kind of funny if it turned out Megan Thee Stallion were actually really mellow and chill when it came to sex as opposed to violently mounting her partners and riding their genitals like, "A stolen car." For all I know Megan Thee Stallion is as extreme sexually as she claims, but it would be funny if at some point the opposite turned out to be true.
