I always enjoy trying exotic new flavors of soda. I seem to often deal with unique variations of Coca-Cola or Mountain Dew. Today is a, "Dew," day, as I sampled the zero sugar iteration of, "Mountain Dew: Trolli Mango Pineapple Punch." Yes, like the candy. Also, yes, it was pretty gross.
Having a beverage that is themed for candy isn't automatically bad. A Snickers latte can be absolutely delicious, after all. Trolli is a chewy and gummy sweet treat, however. When I think of soda, I prefer it to be in liquid form, as opposed to being chewy or gummy (Dr. Pepper gummy candy aside). With the texture of Trolli removed from the equation, you're basically just left with a beverage that is quite sweet and fruity...like almost any other Mountain Dew flavor, right? No, because this being Trolli-flavored means it tastes like you shoved a bunch of them in your mouth at once and got a weird tropical mix of pineapple, mango, and one flavor I could swear I taste but don't see mentioned anywhere--coconut.
From my use of Google and some annoyingly-eager-to-"Help," AI chatbots, I saw no mention of a coconut flavor, but in my opinion, it is in there! Samii tried a sip too and agreed with me that something about it had a coconut vibe. Whether it is coconut or not, that weird taste (and aftertaste) ruins any promise I felt at first when I sipped the Zero Sugar Mountain Dew: Trolli Pineapple Punch. I love a good tropical punch-styled drink, but coconut only works for me in certain contexts (with even the smallest amount of it going a long way, too). In the end, this flavor is another misfire for me. Perhaps the Trolli Cherry Lemon is better? I'll try to find some of it. That said, as of now, the only Mountain Dew flavor I've ever truly been into--even more than the OG--is Code Red (in regular or sugar-free forms). The only sodas I can think of ever tasting worse would be Coke's Georgia Peach and California Raspberry. "Yuck," all around.
1 out of 5 Stars.
